First Step Infant/Toddler Programs: An early intervention program for infants and toddlers at high risk for disabilities, this service focuses on educating the parent as well as stimulating development of the childs abilities. Typical participants include premature or low birth weight babies, those diagnosed as having cerebral palsy or developmental disabilities, or babies with unknown etiologies for delays in their development. Services are provided at the Center and in the home for those babies not yet ready for a center-based program and are implemented by an infant specialist, a speech and language pathologist, a physical therapist and a counselor.
Summer Residential Respite Camping: Campers enjoy six to eight-day sessions at Camp Costanoan from June through August. Camp emphasizes therapeutic recreation, socialization and hands-on learning opportunities for children and adults. Program areas include arts and crafts, music and drama, swimming, hiking, nature study, horseback-riding, campfires, talent shows and other activities selected and adapted to each camper's age, abilities and interest. The Camp is constructed to be accessible.
Respite Camping Weekends: One to two weekends per month, camp respite programs are offered to provide disabled individuals with an action-packed weekend away from home, while offering parents and other caregivers a much-needed break from the 24-hour a day responsibilities of caring for a disabled family member.
Community Supports Program: This is Via's newest program, and provides adults (18 years and over) with counseling and training relative to community service participation. The program educates potential partners (existing community service groups) about the prevalence of developmental disabilities, misconceived notions, and the importance of inclusive experiences which benefit, not just the individuals with disabilities, but also the community. The program is a means to encourage volunteerism in the lives of people with developmental disabilities and to encourage the community to accept them in this valuable role.
Via's professional staff are available for in-service trainings in public and private schools and other agencies, as well as for community groups.
