FIRST STEP EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM

 Infant and Toddler Program

The Infant and Toddler Program at First Step serves young children from birth to 36 months who are either diagnosed at birth as having a disability or who, because of certain conditions present during pregnancy, delivery or birth, are considered to be at risk for developmental delays.  This parent participation program emphasizes early hands-on intervention designed to help parents learn ways to stimulate the growth and development of their child, to recognize their child's abilities and needs and to set reasonable goals for their child as he or she develops.

Activities at the center-based program may be implemented on both a group and individual basis.  Group activities may include, but are not limited to instruction on feeding techniques, perceptual and motor activities, music stimulation and tactile activities.  Our experienced staff of professionals include early intervention specialists and educators, registered occupational therapists, licensed and certified speech-language pathologists, licensed physical therapists and Master's level counselors.  Home-bases services may be arranged for those children who are medically fragile and/or those who are not yet ready to transition to a center-based program.

The First Step staff conduct diagnostic evaluations as well as provide the therapeutic intervention in this infant and toddler program.  Therefore, each child receives a coordinated and individualized program to best meet his or her needs.  Additionally, staff coordinate closely with medical professionals, community agencies and related services.

The First Step Infant and Toddler Program also includes a Monitoring Program for Premature Babies.  This program provides multidisciplinary, comprehensive services for families of very low birth weight and premature babies.  This program coordinates closely with regional NICU follow-up programs.
