Altitude

Altitude provides year-round camping experiences for boys and girls with social cognitive challenges including: verbal and nonverbal learning disabilities, ADHD, Asperger’s, and high functioning autism. We build social skills, independence, and self-confidence to prepare our participants for the transition to young adulthood, future relationships, and the rest of their lives.

Altitude

Altitude provides year-round camping experiences for boys and girls with social cognitive challenges such as:

  • High-functioning autism
  • Asperger’s
  • ADHD
  • Nonverbal learning disability

At Altitude we:

  • Provide opportunities to develop social skills
  • Foster independence
  • Promote self-confidence
  • Prepare our participants for the transition to high school, young adulthood, future relationships, and the rest of their lives

Children with social cognitive challenges may:

  • Have difficulty making friends
  • Feel left-out or excluded
  • “Monologue” on preferred topics
  • Struggle with reciprocal conversation
  • Struggle initiation conversation with peers
  • Prefer to talk to adults
  • Have low self-esteem
  • Appear socially awkward

At Altitude, we understand that your child may spend a good portion of the academic year worrying about making friends or feeling left-out or excluded. As a parent, you may worry about your child’s self-esteem and their ability to make friends. Altitude provides a community where your child can feel like they fit in while being relaxed and confident about who they are.

Many of our parents come to our website looking for unique Asperger’s programs, autism weekends, and social skills groups. They often report that their child cannot make friends and is bullied or picked on in their school setting. This is one of the many reasons we are so happy to be able to offer recreational programs where kids can fit in and just be themselves. Many of our participants leave a weekend camp reporting that they finally feel like they “fit in” and that they have found a place just for them. We hope your child can have a similar experience at Altitude.

Weekend Camps

Our weekend camps are designed to provide shorter-duration Altitude experiences that allow new participants to ease into the programs while returning participants are able to stay connected with the community. Participants are encouraged to connect with others through unique programming that focuses on fun, outdoor, group, and recreational activities. For more specific details on each of the programs, please refer to the registration brochure.

GO Weekend

This Altitude weekend provides a truly unique opportunity for girls with social/cognitive challenges to find ways to connect while respecting each other’s individual qualities.

As most of us already know, girls are a minority in the social/cognitive population; additionally, our society has different expectations for boys and girls, and girls have their own nonverbal codes of social interaction, which can be difficult to navigate. During Altitude’s GO weekend, campers will have a safe and welcome environment where they can interact with other teenage girls while engaging in fun, recreational activities such as horseback riding, hiking, collaborative art projects, movie night and synchronized swimming!

We want our girls to feel empowered, practice self-advocacy, and increase self-confidence! These activity-based group interactions can provide an opportunity for girls to share their experiences and know they are not alone.

Energize Me: Nutrition, Fitness, and Health

Who says healthy living can’t be fun? And it’s even more fun when we work on it as a team! As we move toward adulthood and independent living we want more energy to explore and master the world around us. Healthy-living is a learned skill and an important one, especially as our kids gain more independence and make more autonomous choices. During this weekend we will work on culinary skills (healthy meals such as, grilled chicken, brown rice, and broccoli), outdoor activities (such as hiking, horseback riding, and circuit training), and using the indoor sports equipment in the Via gym, and of course, socializing!

Leadership

This weekend is aimed at helping our younger campers prepare for post-high school life and our older campers to continue to navigate the adult world.

We will help participants to discover and understand their own strengths and challenges so that they can assess what kinds of careers or educational settings will be most appropriate for them. During this weekend, we will work on interview skills, customer service skills, event planning, and budgeting - all in the context of running a candy store! While engaging in this fun and collaborative project, campers have the opportunity to develop self-awareness, self-advocacy, and critical conversational skills.

Our campers will work hard over this weekend, but will hopefully make lasting connections with other campers which can be further explored during more recreational activities like evening s’mores and games.
