New BBQ at Via West Campus

One of our favorite spots on the Via West Campus is the outdoor BBQ. The members of the San Jose Scales of Just Lions Club volunteer often to grill for our participants. The BBQ is a central part of the Via West campus – outdoor eating in our environment is very enjoyable for our participants and staff alike - however, it was very old and had not been worked on our knowledge in over 30 years. Scales of Justice continued to perform excellently with this dilapidated equipment but it was getting harder and harder. Richard Bothman, one of the leaders of the Scales group, approached his son and Via Services board member Brian Bothman of Bothman Construction. Together, they completely overhauled the BBQ – adding electricity, lighting, sinks/plumbing, granite counter tops etc. The ribbon cutting took place on October 8th in time to open for the fall festival where we had over 500 people attend.

KaBOOM! Build Day at Via West

On August 31st, we were joined at Via West Campus by KaBOOM!, the Sharks Foundation, Groupware Technology, and community volunteers to build a new accessible playground. The thousands of children and adults served annually at Via West Campus now have a safe and adaptive on-site play space where they can improve their strength, coordination, and sequencing skills. The playground will contribute nicely to the socialization, cooperation, and teamwork skills that are consistently taught in programs. Read more in the below article from the San Jose Mercury News:
