Farrington Historical Foundation

​Featured Foundation: Farrington Historical Foundation

Throughout her life, Dorothy Bogen Farrington was a well-loved benefactor to organizations that she believed made significant contributions to the well-being of both her local community and the world. Today, Via Services is proud to be a community partner with the Farrington Historical Foundation with a shared mission to improve the quality of life for area residents.

In 2014-15, the foundation substantially contributed to the purchase and installation of a beautiful year-round greenhouse at Via West Campus that allows children, teens, and adults with disabilities to master gardening skills during school year respite weekends and longer summer camps. Throughout 2016, Via West offered Cooking with Friends, a year-round adapted culinary arts and nutrition program, thanks to another generous grant.

In 2017-18, the foundation-funded Roots to Employment program expanded Via’s community-based independent living skills and vocational offerings by teaching the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with successful gardening so participants can then segue into culinary arts, horticultural and vocational programs in their home communities.

Currently, Via West participants are happily engaged in the foundation-funded Growing MyPlate, a collaborative horticultural and culinary arts program that teaches them to harvest and prep produce from the greenhouse and garden, sample unfamiliar fruits and vegetables to reduce sensory aversion, and create healthy meals aligned with the USDA MyPlate Food Model.
