Giving Tuesday Exceeds Goal
Thank you to everyone who supported Via Services on Giving Tuesday! Because of you, we exceeded our goal of $38,000!
What is Giving Tuesday?
We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world came together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
Our 13 acre, Via West Campus provides special needs camping services to thousands of children and adults each year through our Via West and Altitude programs, and after 60 years, some of the physical facilities are in desperate need of improvement. The amphitheater remains one of the biggest challenges because of its location on a steep slope, which has caused the original seating areas to shift and the concrete path to those seats to crumble. The wooden benches are tilted at an angle, making seating positions precarious. The stage itself has become inaccessible to many of our campers as tree roots have pushed upward, and it’s in sad need of renovation. Finally, the covered bridge walkway to the amphitheater itself is weakening and unsightly.
Music, dramatic arts, and talent shows have been an integral part of our programs since 1950, making the amphitheater an important part of our traditions. Many campers have attended for 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years, and they look forward to those activities. We consistently find that even the most reluctant campers step forward when the music starts, that those who are non-verbal shine when given an opportunity to take the stage in a solo or group performance, and that socialization and peer relationships flourish at the amphitheater.
The funds raised will allow us to expand the seating section to allow for wheelchairs and renovate the existing narrow wooden benches with safer, more comfortable seating for campers during talent shows, plays, and musical events. We will also renovate the stage, making it accessible and more aesthetically pleasing with appropriate lighting, a curtain, and backdrops. Lastly, we will repair and paint the wooden bridge walkway.
