Coronavirus Updates and Important Information

UPDATE 3/24/20 1:00pm

After careful consideration and based on current guidelines from the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, Center for Disease Control, and World Health Organization, we have decided to postpone our 4th Annual Poker Tournament, which was to take place on Thursday, May 7th. We made this decision with the health and safety or our families, supporters, and staff as our highest priority.

Our 2020 Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for June 5th, and we remain optimistic that we will still be able to proceed with this fun event as planned. We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation closely, and we will update you should anything change.

UPDATE 3/16/20 12:15pm

In response to the escalating health crisis related to COVID-19, Via Services is following the most recent direction and recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Developmental Services (DDS), The County of Santa Clara, and San Andreas Regional Center. Accordingly, we are instituting the following policy changes. Until further notice:

1. The Via Services office is closed to the general public. Employees will begin a work from home schedule effective immediately.

2. The First Step Program will cease providing in-person therapy and assessment services. We are currently exploring alternative service delivery methods, such as videoconferencing, and will communicate with families as soon as possible.

3. Weekend Respite and Altitude sessions scheduled at the Via West Campus are canceled per the CDC’s recommendation against holding gatherings of more than 50 people for the next 60 days. Those registered for these sessions will be contacted by Via staff to discuss rescheduling or reimbursement options.

Summer Registration is open! At this time, we are planning to conduct our full schedule of summer Respite and Altitude camps. Sessions are filling up fast, so please click here to register online.

As always, the health and safety of our clients, their families, and our employees are of the utmost importance to Via Services. We apologize for the interruption of these vital programs and services and look forward to resuming our work as soon as possible.

Despite the growing COVID-19 outbreak and resulting public concern, we were committed to conducting this weekend’s respite session as planned. We deeply value you - our families and camp participants - and have a keen understanding of the importance of our respite services. Unfortunately, a number of factors have combined to prevent us from doing so. We hope you will please accept our sincere apologies.

As of this update, nearly 50% of our participants have canceled for this weekend, and we anticipate more cancellations before tomorrow afternoon. In addition, as dedicated as our counseling staff is, they are expressing concerns of their own about the safety of working a respite session at this time. Given all of the attention and often conflicting information being distributed in the media, we can definitely understand.

For these reasons, and due to the rapidly changing nature of this crisis, we are making the difficult decision to cancel this weekend’s Dr. Dolittle respite session. Of course, your payments will be credited going forward. Looking ahead, it is difficult to predict how the crisis will affect future respite sessions. Rest assured, we will continue to communicate updates as they become available. The Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is making headlines and while the risk remains low, we want our families and staff to know we are taking the following precautions:

Via’s First Step Program

  • Frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds (all therapists wash hands before each client/assessment session and at the end of each client/assessment session)
  • Speech-language therapists and occupational therapists will not have physical contact with clients’ faces (this includes PROMPT method for speech support)
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers and disposable wipes located throughout clinic
  • Routine, frequent cleaning of hard surfaces including doorknobs, light switches, counters, and toys
  • All staff and clients/families are expected to follow the sick policy to prevent spread of any illnesses

Via West Campus

  • Frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers located throughout campus
  • Routine and scheduled cleaning of hard surfaces including doorknobs, light switches, and counters
  • All campers and staff screened by nursing staff - checking for cough, shortness of breath, or fever
  • All campers and staff screened for recent exposure to COVID-19
  • All campers, families, and staff screened for recent international travel

The health and safety of our clients, their families, and our staff are out highest priority. Unfortunately, this means that we are unable to serve clients presenting with any signs of illness (e.g. cough, runny nose, fever, etc.) even if not related to sickness. This same precaution is also being taken with our staff. We will continue to follow the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization recommendations to reduce risk and adjust protocols as necessary.
