Our Goal: $10,000 to equip the new Sobrato Center for the Performing Arts
Our 13 acre Via West Campus provides special needs camping services to thousands of children and adults each year through our Via West and Altitude programs. Music, dance, and performing arts have been an integral part of our programs since 1950, and the performing arts building is an important part of our traditions. We are so excited to cut the ribbon on our brand new Sobrato Center for the Performing Arts on May 22. Construction on this project began in late 2015 when we outgrew the previous building. The new state-of-the-art facility is double the size, allowing it to act as a muilti-functional building that will be the home of our performing arts programs, sensory room, and tech center.
Many of our campers have attended for 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years, and they look forward to our music and arts activities. We consistently find that even the most reluctant campers step forward when the music starts, that socialization and peer relationships flourish because music is a non-verbal form of communication.
In addition to the benefits that our music programs provide, several of our campers also rely on the break that the sensory room affords to them. It is important to have a place to go to when the sensory overload of activities becomes overwhelming, where campers can recharge before happily returning to their group.
The funds raised will equip our new Sobrato Center for the Performing Arts so that our programs can be optimized for our summer camping season. We will purchase musical instruments and costumes for our arts programs, noise cancelling headphones and furniture (bean bags and body pillows) for our sensory room, and sanitizing equipment for the whole building.
