As a service of Via, Camp Costanoan is a non-profit organization that relies on the community for its support. Groups may volunteer by sponsoring a work party or a program activity at Camp. A work party would consist of your group coming for the day to clear trails, cut back brush or paint one of the Camp buildings or you may build something for the Camp such as benches. Groups may also volunteer for a few hours to lead a program activity. A program activity such as bingo can be led by just a few people whereas large groups may wish to sponsor a carnival. Our campers love meeting new people and they are full of energy making your volunteer experience exciting and rewarding. Each year our volunteers play a very important role in helping our campers to grow in an open, caring, social setting. Direct camper/counselor interaction offers both campers and volunteers the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills while participating in our many entertaining and educational programs. Camp Costanoan provides an invaluable chance to gain some first hand experience in working with the disabled. This experience would be especially beneficial to individuals interested in areas of education, recreation, nursing or psychology. In addition to the work related experience gained, Camp can offer you the opportunity to give back to the community. Because a large portion of what we do depends so heavily on volunteers, your interest in our program is important to us. During the school year we operate several weekend camps. We serve both children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. A volunteer serves as a counselor and is responsible for the physical and emotional needs of one to three campers. You are responsible for helping your camper with areas where he or she may need assistance. This may include daily living skills such as dressing, teeth brushing and meal supervision. You will also attend the various Camp programs (Music and Drama, Sports, Nature, Arts, etc.) with your campers while encouraging/assisting them to participate in the scheduled activities. If your school requires you to do community service hours or work experience with the disabled, we can offer you 27.5 core hours and an additional 1.5 support hours. Camp takes a lot of patience, commitment, the ability to learn and the ability to have fun! If you possess these qualities, we would love to have you! We know that the time and effort needed to commit to this program is extensive, but we also know that the experience is one that will last you a lifetime.
